European Innovation Council Transition calls - first 2022 cut-off statistics

143 proposal for EIC Transition Open, 22 for Challenges in the first cut-off, read the article for full information

The European Commission’s European Innovation Council (EIC) received 165 proposals for the first 2022 cut-off of EIC Transition calls. EIC Transition projects focus on results generated by EIC Pathfinder, FET (Future and Emerging Technologies) or European Research Council (ERC) Proof of Concept projects, to mature the technologies and build a business case for specific applications. Grants of up to €2.5 million are available to validate and demonstrate technology in application-relevant environment and develop market readiness.

EIC Transition Open call

143 proposals from 33 countries have been submitted for the EIC Transition Open call, requesting a budget of €328.5 million.

EIC Transition Open funds novel technologies from any scientific field that have already reached the experimental proof of principle in laboratory. These technologies should aim to achieve further maturation and validation in the lab and in relevant application environments in order to develop market readiness.

EIC Transition Challenges

22 proposals from 17 countries have been submitted for the call under EIC Transition Challenges:

  • 2 proposals under Green digital devices for the future, requesting €2.98 million
  • 17 proposals under Process and system integration of clean energy technologies requesting €144 million
  • 3 proposals under RNA-based therapies and diagnostics for complex or rare genetic diseases requesting €6.7 million.

The EIC Transition Green digital devices for the future challenge is specifically addressed to demonstrate novel digital devices and/or architectures that have a clear and quantifiable advantage with respect to energy efficiency, reduce e-waste, the scarcity of the rare and/or heavy metals compared with existing alternatives for a class of relevant problems or applications.

The EIC Transition Process and system integration of clean energy technologies challenge finances projects that develop energy technologies, including renewable fuels enabling the decarbonisation of energy sector. They aim to facilitate the selection of different and appropriate applications and use cases, and integration of these sustainable technologies into existing and new energy systems and devices, both at component, process or at infrastructure level.

The EIC Transition RNA-based therapies and diagnostics for complex or rare genetic diseases challenge finances novel technological solutions leading to more effective and safer RNA delivery methods applicable to a wide range of non-infectious diseases. In the same time, projects are expected to tackle the utilisation of RNAs to molecularly classify sub-types of different solid tumours that would allow for stratification of patients leading to more effective and precise treatments in complex diseases with high-unmet medical needs.

Next steps

The proposals are now being evaluated and projects will start in autumn 2022.
