Alejandro Datas is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physical Electronics, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Physics at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He is also a researcher at the Solar Energy Institute of the same university. Alejandro earned his Ph.D. in Photovoltaic Solar Energy from UPM in 2011. His research mainly focuses on developing thermophotovoltaic devices that convert thermal energy into electricity. Aside from his work at UPM, Alejandro has conducted research at institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He has published over 50 scientific articles, holds 5 patents, and has coordinated four European projects. Three of these projects, supported by the European Innovation Council, aimed at creating new thermal energy storage technology using molten silicon alloys and thermophotovoltaic devices. Alejandro is also a founding partner of Thermophoton (www.thermophoton.com), a UPM spin-off focused on bringing the thermophotovoltaic devices developed by his research team to the commercial market.
