Jerzy Langer

Biography

Physicist, Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences

Jerzy is Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, specialising in physics of semiconductors. Some of his major internationally acclaimed scientific achievements and discoveries include the discovery of bistability of defects in semiconductors and their negative-U character and the co-discovery of a novel mechanism of efficient holographic storage in semiconductors with bistable defects and physics of recombination phenomena in solids, particularly related to localized impurities in semiconductors.

Elected Fellow and former Foreign Secretary of Academia Europaea, Elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and a Founding Member and Honorary Vice President of EUROSCIENCE. Former Deputy Minister of Science. Was the President of the Wrocław Research Centre EIT+ (now PORT), the largest new research and innovation infrastructure in Poland – co-funded by the cohesion funds.

In his science policy advisory capacity assisted European Commission as a member/head of major science and innovation advisory bodies to the EC (EURAB, ISTAG, Governing Board of the JRC and Smart Specialisation Strategy Platform, FETAG, EIC Pilot). Acting as a Future Emerging Technologies (FET)-AG chair, conducted, and coordinated analysis to underpin the European Innovation Council (EIC) and the European Research Council (ERC). In the ERC headed the Advance Grants panel in condensed matter.
