Migueal Castanho

Biography

Miguel is the coordinator of the project NOVIRUSES2BRAIN, which is developing a 'one size fits all' unique drug to eradicate multiple viral species simultaneously from the central nervous system.

Goals of Miguel Castanho’s research group at Instituto de Medicina Molecular are to unravel the physical principles that govern interactions at molecular level of clinically relevant compounds with model cell systems, to develop new drugs and improve understanding of the mechanism(s) of action of established drugs, and the study of antiviral peptide drugs to transmigrate across the Blood-Brain-Barrier (BBB), targeting enveloped viruses in the Central Nervous System (CNS).

Miguel Castanho has expertise in the design and study of membrane-active peptides, with activities ranging from antiviral, antimicrobial, anticancer, analgesic and drug delivery using a wide variety of experimental methods and structural biology approaches.
