Jean-David Malo, Director of the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency, received the innovation award on behalf of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel from the President of CTA, Gary J. Shapiro during the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), the biggest world tech event taking place on 5-8 January 2023 in Las Vegas (US).
The new ranking produced by the CTA rates for the first time the European Union at their top score: “Global Innovation Champions”, confirming the improvement since the last score published in 2019.
The Global Innovation Scorecard has been produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) after the review of 71 countries. It is a comparative analysis of 40 indicators that fuel innovation across 17 categories. The Global Innovation Champions are recognised to provide the most welcoming environments for innovation, economic growth and social progress. They have adopted policies that enable tech innovation in fields as diverse health, digital finance and transportation.
Background information
The European Innovation Council is Europe’s flagship innovation initiative with €10 billion budget for 2021-2027 to support innovation from lab to market. Among the support that EIC beneficiaries receive from the EIC, companies have the possibility to attend the most important global trade fairs, like CES Las Vegas 2023, where 20 of the most innovative EIC-funded companies present their products and services at the European Pavilion to the expected 100 000 attendees, including 3 500 members of global media.
This year, for the first time at CES, the European Innovation Council is co-organising the European Night together with the European national pavilions, to celebrate and promote the European innovation excellence.
