The EU-funded AROMA project aims to enable in vivo non-invasive exploration of cognitive functions of the human brain at the mesoscopic scale. This achievement includes the introduction of non-incremental magnetic resonance imaging technology at the unprecedented field strength of 11.7T. The project was funded through FET-Open, part of the EIC Pathfinder pilot and involves a multidisciplinary effort of six partners from five countries representing academia and industry.
The ambition of the project is to study healthy and diseased human brains with an unprecedented resolution, allowing the discovery of new details relating to the brain’s anatomy, connections, and activity. The detailed resolutions achieved through the AROMA project will allow for obtaining previously unattainable information about brain mechanisms and will support diagnostic and health care for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as psychiatric diseases, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders.
