ECaBox is a novel ex vivo perfusion platform that maintains viable whole pig and human-donor eyes under near-physiological conditions, creating a human-relevant model for preclinical ophthalmic drug testing and translational research. It addresses a key bottleneck in drug development, since conventional animal and in vitro models often fail to replicate human retinal physiology, contributing to high attrition rates in clinical trials. Beyond accelerating new therapies, ECaBox could also open new possibilities for donor eye preservation and for future human eye transplantation.
