ECaBox

  • Vision & Impact

ECaBox aims to transform how vision therapies are developed by enabling human relevant and ethical research. It seeks to bring safer and more effective eye treatments to patients and, in the long term, lays the foundations for eye preservation for eye transplantation.

  • Collaboration

The EIC has provided not only funding, but strategic guidance and access to a strong innovation ecosystem. Through portfolio activities and networking, we gained valuable feedback, new collaborations and a clearer view of how research can evolve towards real-world impact.

  • What's next ?

Looking ahead, we will continue to explore how ECaBox can support research on complex eye diseases and emerging therapies. Alongside validation and collaboration, we are working to enable its uptake in real world settings, so that this approach can benefit patients in a responsible and robust way.

EIC support has given us the opportunity to pursue a bold dream that, just a few years ago, felt almost impossible: reviving an eye and preserving it outside the body for ex vivo testing of new therapies. Today, with the ECaBox system, that dream has become a reality. We can now keep whole, human and human like eyes alive, and even work with multiple eyes in parallel, to better understand vision and develop safer treatments. This work reflects a broader European ambition to advance more ethical, human relevant science, in clear alignment with priorities such as the 3Rs and New Approach Methodologies. We see a future in which pioneering science, ethics and patient therapy development progress together, reinforcing one another throughout the development process. We are thrilled by these possibilities, which will be catalysed by the continued support of the EIC. We look forward to the discoveries, achievements, and impact that lie ahead.
