Today Commission appointed ten new members of the European Innovation Council (EIC) Board and renewed the appointments of ten existing ones. Under Horizon Europe legislation, the Board has a central role to guide the strategy and implementation of the EIC as Europe’s flagship innovation programme with a budget of more than €10 billion. The EIC Board, led by its President, advises on the strategy, work programme and thematic portfolios and the Commission can request advice on broader innovation policy matters.
Members of the Board act in a personal capacity and are appointed for a two-year term of office, renewable twice (with the aim of rotating approximately one third of the members every two years). The mandate of the new and renewed members is for two years until December 2025. The first meeting of the renewed Board is due to take place in Leuven, on 10 and 11 January 2024.
Background information
Members of the EIC Board are selected among the applicants who participated in the call for expression of interest published in 2021. The composition of the renewed Board ensures a strong diversity and balance considering:
- Innovation expertise: covering leading researchers, entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, ecosystem builders and innovation experts; with thematic expertise in key areas for Europe’s future innovations, including digital, health and the green transition;
- Gender: the Board has a 50:50 balance between women and men;
- Geography: the new Board includes individuals with 17 nationalities, including 8 coming from Horizon Europe widening countries;
- Age: including relatively young members (below 35) and more experienced (over 65).
