Sarah Verhulst

Sarah Verhulst is Full Professor at Ghent University where she is leading the Hearing Technology lab, an interdisciplinary research group working on the interface between auditory neuroscience, computational modelling and (hearing-impaired) sound perception. She received her PhD from the Technical University of Denmark and previously worked at Boston, Harvard and Oldenburg University. She is a member of the Belgian Young Academy of Sciences, a laureate of the Belgian Academy of Sciences (Technical Sciences) and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. Using ERC StG and PoC grants, her lab pioneered an EEG-based technique to diagnose hearing damage much sooner than standard clinical practice and developed a new type of machine-learning-based embedded audio-signal processing for the next-generation of personalized hearables and hearing-aids. With the EIC transition grant, her team is bringing these four patents and technologies as medical devices and consumer electronics to patient and market.
