Biography

Sorin is a founder and investor whose career spans journalism, politics, EU policymaking, and advanced technology deployment. Trained as an economist, he holds a DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford and began his professional life as a journalist before playing a strategic role in Romania’s EU accession process.

He is Co-Founder, Director, and Chairman of the Board of Skyy Network, an Australian company developing UAV traffic management solutions, quantitative risk models, and executing complex long-range drone operations. The work integrates aviation safety engineering, autonomy, operational expertise and continuous adaptation to regulatory innovation into viable scalable commercial solutions.

As a Member of the European Parliament (2014-2019), Sorin served in the Committee on International Trade, where he served as Rapporteur, Shadow Rapporteur or key interlocutor for EU trade negotiations with Mexico, Canada, Singapore, Australia, Moldova, and the United States.

As a substitute member of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee, he supported and joined multiple EU missions promoting European start-ups and scale-ups in Silicon Valley, including ‘Start-up Europe comes to Silicon Valley’ and ‘European Innovation Day’. He organised debates and events on emerging technologies and their economic and societal implications, - AI, blockchain, autonomous and electric vehicles, VR & AR, and hosted pitching competitions for young entrepreneurs.

Geographically, his areas of institutional political interest were North America, ASEAN, the Arab Peninsula, Australia, New Zealand, and the EU’s Eastern neighbourhood.

In 2016 and 2017, Politico Europe ranked him as one of the 40 most influential Members of the European Parliament.

From 2010 to 2014, as Deputy Head of Cabinet to the European Commissioner for Agriculture, he contributed to the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, and coordinated agricultural aspects of trade negotiations with notably Canada, Japan, South Korea, Moldova, as well as the EU’s position on WTO matters within the portfolio.

Earlier, he served as Political Advisor at the Delegation of the European Commission in Romania during the crucial years of Romania’s accession negotiations (2002-2006), following years as a senior journalist and columnist in one of the country’s leading newspaper groups.

Sorin is also an investor in technology companies listed in Europe and the United States- particularly in biotech and AI - with a focus on scientific and clinical validation, technology pipelines, and industrial scalability.

Sorin applied for the EIC Board out of a sense of duty and urgency, convinced that Europe must accelerate the translation of scientific excellence into industrial leadership, scale-ready companies and globally competitive technologies.
