The rising demand for computational resources driven by generative AI and large language models is pushing traditional GPU architectures to their limits, increasing concerns about energy consumption and costs. Inspired by the human brain’s efficiency, the SpiNNaker2 chip and SpiNNcloud system leverage biological evolution to deliver brain-like performance while reducing energy needs.
The EIC-funded SpiNNext project aims to develop a next-generation chip based on the SpiNNaker2 technology to meet the needs of modern generative AI. This chip addresses the challenge of sparse, selective computation patterns in advanced algorithms by incorporating native hardware support for dynamic sparsity. It will foster new AI development opportunities, promote European technological sovereignty, and reduce AI-related carbon emissions through enhanced energy efficiency.
